The Bee Cafe project now known as the Bee Cafe CIC is a community-driven / council-supported initiative in Woodbridge, Suffolk. The main aim of which is to help bees and other pollinators in urban areas by filling “pollen gaps” and creating networks of food sources.

The initial concept was to provide sustenance to encourage pollinators to cross the urban space that is Woodbridge, in order to join the established b-lines from Rushmere to Sutton Heath. It has affectionately been named the Woodbridge bee-pass.

The brain child of local eco geek Paul Martin, the project was conceived during the 2020 lockdown as an antidote to boredom and stress with a focus on improving the local environment, promoting the welfare of bees and other wildlife.

The bee pass consists of a number of bee cafes. Bee cafes are planters made primarily of natural and reclaimed/recycled materials. Each contains a number of showy natural pollinators, interspersed with less showy native and in some case endangered, insect friendly wildflowers. What differentiates the bee cafe from other planters is the technology that supports an automated watering system, monitoring devices and of course the developing app.

However, above and beyond that is the community of volunteers who have adopted their own local bee cafe’s and have become stakeholders in ensuring their success. Not only are the bee cafes promoting the biodiversity of the area but they are enriching the lives of the people around them. Providing educational experiences for children and creating small oases of calm accessible by all.

Supported by local growers it is hoped that the increase in biodiversity, and available pollen will promote the number of pollinators that are able to exist within a given area and to link up fragmented habitats.
