Western Red Cedar: Thuja plicata
Two trees stand tall at over 20 metres high. These are Western Red Cedars (Thuja plicata). This species was introduced into UK by Cornish man William Lobb in 1853 on his third return from plant hunting in both South and North America for Veitch Nursery in Exeter. It had been discovered earlier by Archibald Menzies during his HMS Discovery survey voyage of 1791-1795 when he observed this plant either side of the Rocky Mountains from Alaska to California and from British Columbia to Montana, where it was extensively used by the American Indians for ‘dug-out’ canoes and totem poles. The timber is rot resistant, hence favoured for making structures for exterior use. It is highly recommended for making roofing shingles because of its properties to resist extremes of weather.
