The leaves are very deeply cut with 3 to 4 paired lobes with several bristle-tipped points and conspicuous brown tufts of hairs in the vein-axils. These turn a fiery red followed by a rich brown colour in the autumn. The acorns are almost hemispherical, held in thin hairy flat cups for up to two years.
