When the Square was redeveloped early in the 1990s, trees were planted in three of the corners. Two of the originals had to be replaced and you should be able to spot which is the remaining original (it is the one with the greatest girth in the north east corner). The branches are graceful and arching with light foliage which allows the sun to shine down to the ground. The leaves are formed of five lobes and the apical lobe has a distinctive waist. This is typical of this variety of Silver Maple which is known as ‘Laciniatum’. It was introduced into Britain in 1875. The leaves have a long stalk and produce a shimmering effect in the sunlight because of their green upper surface and silvery white underside.

It had been discovered earlier by Archibald Menzies during his HMS Discovery survey voyage of 1791-1795 when he observed this plant either side of the Rocky Mountains from Alaska to California and from British Columbia to Montana, where it was extensively used by the American Indians for ‘dug-out’ canoes and totem poles. The timber is rot resistant, hence favoured for making structures for exterior use. It is highly recommended for making roofing shingles because of its properties to resist extremes of weather.

Scots Pine
To continue your walk you will now enter a small arboretum of a little over twenty species of trees growing between the pond edge and Sussex Road. The area starts with a canopy of about a dozen Scots Pines (Pinus sylvestris) displaying a pink hue on the higher bark of the trees. This species may have survived the last glacial period in the tundra as tiny plants. As the ice sheets melted it re-established and became first to colonise the land as much as 11,500 years ago. This is one of the many pines which produces its needle shaped leaves in pairs which are short and blue-green. Now look for a pine which has longer darker needles and does not have the pink tinge to the upper bark. This is the Black Pine (Pinus nigra).
Golden Weeping Willow
Soon you will be standing by a single Weeping Golden Willow (Salix × sepulcralis ‘Chrysocoma’), weeping over the pond. This hybrid was first mentioned in 1888, produced in Späth Nursery in Berlin by cross‑breeding S. alba ‘Vitellina’ — which provides the hardiness and golden shoots — and S. babylonica, which provides the strong weeping habit.
Pin Oak bark
Next along the water’s edge you will notice a Pin Oak (Quercus palustris). There are very few oaks which tolerate wet ground and flooding as well as this species does. It is native to wet flat lands of eastern-central USA. Rooting is shallow rooting as adequate oxygen is limited near the surface. The term ‘pin’ derives from short sharp spur shoots which are most common on young trees. You can observe remnants of these up the trunk. The leaves are very deeply cut with 3 to 4 paired lobes with several bristle-tipped points and conspicuous brown tufts of hairs in the vein-axils. These turn a fiery red followed by a rich brown colour in the autumn. The acorns are almost hemispherical, held in thin hairy flat cups for up to two years.
Coppiced Sweet Chestnut
Close to the end of the arboretum you pass by a very old root stock of a long ago coppiced Sweet Chestnut (Castanea sativa) which has regenerated a collection of six boles around the base of the felled tree. This species has been in Britain since the Roman occupation and is a long-lived plant. A phenomenon of this tree is the spiral ridges of the bark which, when mature, can twist in either direction.
